Liechtenstein is an idyllic tiny country nestled in between Switzerland and Austria. To put the size of Liechtenstein into perspective; Liechtenstein has a population of 37,871 which is considerably smaller than the college where I obtained my Master’s Degree, Rutgers University, with over 48,000 students. Where to Stay
When planning our Liechtenstein adventure, we were in search of an AirBnB and found an adorable apartment with great views in Buchs, Switzerland located just next door to Liechtenstein. Our AirBnB was only a 10 minute drive to Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein, making it a prefect home base for spending two days in Liechtenstein.
Places to See
Vaduz
The capital (and largest) city of Liechtenstein has a population of 5,429. Parking here is easy to find and free on the weekends! Walk along the pedestrian street lined with shops, restaurants, and museums. The Visitor Information Center has maps of hiking trails, souvenirs, and you can even get your passport stamped here, though it will cost you 5 euros.
Vaduz Castle
The beginning of the trail leads you to the Vaduz Castle is located along the pedestrian street. All of the hikes in Liechtenstein are clearly marked and well maintained. The walk starts out quite steep, but it levels out and becomes a more gradual incline as you near the castle. Along the path there are informational boards with insight into the history of Liechtenstein. The views from the castle are beautiful!
Trails/Nature
If you are outdoorsy, enjoy hiking, and love amazing views then you will have an amazing time in this country. Some people visit and plan to walk the length of the whole country (how cool)! I wrote a blog post about our day hike on the famous and beautiful Fürstensteig trail.
Schloss Werdenberg
Schloss Werdenberg is located in Buchs, Switzerland and was in walking distance from our AirBnB. An old medieval town with beautiful historic homes in perfect condition is located inside the castle walls.
We did an audio tour of the castle and the Schlengenhaus. At first we only wanted to view the castle, but both were included in the price of admission so why not do both? We arrived with less than 2 hours till closing, so we had to fast forward our audio tour of the Schlengenhaus.
When we reached the castle we were surprised to find very few people inside. The information displays were also a bit unusual. Some of them were puppet show style with characters coming down from the ceiling to explain the castle’s history. We even found a room with a boa constrictor (in a terrarium of course). It seemed random to find a large snake in an empty castle with self-guided tours.
Even with some of the oddities inside the castle, the best part was climbing to the top of the castle tower. At the top you will find an amazing view of the town and on a clear day it is an excellent spot to take photos.
